Looking back, television was one of the turning points. Before that, football largely lived through radio voices locals recognised instantly and grew attached. Television transformed the scale. Remember the black and white broadcasts? Not that I was born in those days, but our generation still grew up aware of that era. Arguably simpler times.

Absolutely! And it happened in waves. Each shift had enough time to settle before the next one arrived, which is probably why those transitions felt smoother than what came after.

Radio to black and white, black and white to colour, then cable TV opening it up even further. Each shift changed the scale of the audience and the commercial logic around it.

The internet is a whole other conversation! Saving that for the next one.
